Representations in the media

Representations in the media

Within my project I would like to address the struggle of immigration in present-day United States. Immigration has become a highly discussed topic, generating lots of controversial attention. As an immigrant to this country, I understand these struggles and would like to portray them in my project. Hundreds of thousands of immigrants the United  go through these struggles yet I feel like they do not get accurate representation. For this reason, I would like to represent this group.

In films centered around the drug trade, like 'Breaking Bad', Latino immigrants are often represented negatively. Although some cases may be accurately represented, the popularity generated by films or shows like Breaking Bad is immense. This popularity gives a huge population of people a general negative view on immigrants within the United States. Latino characters like Gustavo Fring and Tuco Salamanca are one of the few Latino characters in the show and are also drug kingpins attaining immense illegal wealth. Every time Mexico is mentioned in the show, it is for the purpose of the drug trade. This is a reoccurring theme seen in many media examples. This representation can be based on some truth, but is not true at all for the general Latino population. Most Latinos are ordinary, peaceful people with no affiliation to crime. Each country has it's own culture which are independent from drug trade or use. These representations make people believe that many or most Latino immigrants are also affiliated to drug trade, which is not true at all. In my project I will challenge these representations of Latino immigrants with more positive ones.

Although many media representations of Latino immigrants are negative, there are still some representations that are positive.  In the film 'McFarland, USA', immigrant families are more accurately represented. The film takes place in a largely Mexican US high school. The film shows the guys on the track team as hard working, dedicated, independent young men with aspiration. Although they may have some fallout with coaches and family, they are represented as normal citizens with interest in ordinary activities. This is an aspect many media representations of Latinos are lacking. Instead of focusing on drug-culture of Latin America, this film focused on dedication and hard-work done by immigrants. As a Latino immigrant, I personally feel this dedication and drive everyday and see it in other people like me. I will retain this characteristic in my project and make it one of the predominant characteristics.

DRAMA GENRE

Drama Film By: Alejandro Carranque

Drama films are developed around real life situations with realistic characters, settings, and plot. Drama films use the
plot as a journey of character development throughout the film. The purpose of a drama film is to impact and move audiences
emotionally. The heart of a drama is the conflict of the film. Conflicts can be inner or outer struggle that depicts any hardships or
pain experienced. Conflict within the film is often representative of a real-world social conflict. Characters who struggle with
conflict may are often characterized with bad habits like drug use ,self-destruction, etc.Characters are commonly made to be
relatable. This is done to draw audiences to the characters, which ultimately ties audiences to characters emotionally. The course
of the film is structured with several precise climaxes and anti-climaxes to hold tension and keep audiences emotionally invested.
Typically a form of realization is portrayed at the end of the film. This realization is a result of the journey experienced by characters.

Drama films usually may utilize low angle and high angle shots. This is done to portray the characters’ power and authority role in the film.
Some drama films use handheld camera movements and POV shots to give a feeling of authenticity within some shots. Close-up and
extreme close-up shots are also often used. They are used to emphasize the expressions and emotions of characters without having to
rely on dialogue. It also greatly develops the personality of characters by giving insight on their mindset. Dolly zooms are also used to
illustrate a moment of realization or shock in a character. Eyeline-match is also used throughout the film to help with the continuity of the film.
Drama films take place in a realistic world setting and use high-key and low-key lighting to emphasize the emotions surrounding the
environment. The sounds in drama films include non-diegetic music scores, diegetic dialogue, and sometimes even a non-diegetic narration.
These dialogue scenes are elongated and often utilize the 180 degree rule and shot-reverse-shot. Drama films use continuity editing, often
in a fast-paced manner, and portray realism.

Crime and Gangster films are typically targeted to people of ages 15-50+. The genre is advertised equally to both genders although some
movies can be targeted to a specific gender depending on plot.

The film makes audiences be-love Forrest and create a relationship with him. Audiences are moved by the several struggles that are thrown at Forrest like his best-friend's death, his mothers death, and his wife Jenny's death. Fight Club
This film is based on the life of a nameless narrator, Edward Norton. The film begins and he is a product recall specialist for a car company who feels
stagnated in his life. He suffers from insomnia and lives his drudging, emotionless life forcefully. He begins going to support group meetings to
experience emotion where he runs into Marla Singer, a woman doing the same as him. He is unhappy to see Marla and they decide to divide the days
they go. On a flight back home, he meets Tyler Durden, a soap salesman who he talks with. Upon arriving to his apartment complex, he discovers that
there was an explosion in his house. With no one else to call, he calls Tyler and he lets him spend the night with him. They go to a bar where they
discuss the superficiality of his lifestyle. They then begin to fight, which strangely brings a sense of relief and euphoria to both of them. Their fights
being gaining attention and other people begin fighting too. This becomes known as "Fight Club", which eventually becomes a local cult. Marla begins
visiting Tyler's house, having sex with him. Edward is disgusted and hates having her around. Fight Club's begins gaining power and Tyler begins pushing
his anarchist agenda on members. Tyler's home becomes a headquarter for the organization and their homework is to destroy forms of capitalist
and government products. One day Tyler is gone and the headquarter begins running itself. When Edward asks, nobody seems to know who Tyler is.
Edward is perplexed and begins to investigate. He discovers that there are many other Fight Clubs across the country and it has an immense power over
the whole country. While at another Fight Club location he speaks to a bartender who reveals to him that he is Tyler Durden. He goes to a motel and
calls Marla who affirms this statement. He is shocked and faints upon discovering this. He then goes to the headquarters of the organization and
sees plans to destroy the financial district. He goes to the police and tries reporting this organized attack but the police are members of the project too.
He realizes that the only way to stop the attack is by himself. He encounters Tyler again who fights him, trying to prevent him from turning off the
explosives. Knowing that Tyler is simply a made up character in his mind, he shoots himself in the head, finally ending Tyler. He unfortunately fails to turn
off the explosives and watches the financial district fall with Marla.

The film carries us through a series of events that expose real life situations. The film causes audiences to think of this mental stagnation that Edward
is in and apply it to ourselves. Edward's mental journey induces feelings of shock, surprise, and interest in the audience
